VP of Engineering
The Basics
- This is a full-time position.
- Work hours are flexible, but meetings are typically scheduled between 9 am and 5 pm Eastern Standard Time.
- The salary range for this position is $230,000 - $250,000 CAD (U.S. salary will differ based on Boston benchmarks).
- This person will report to our CEO Ben Nashman and work closely with our VP of Operations Andressa Lacerda Bonga.
In this role, we'll expect you to:
- Define and implement engineering strategy across hardware, embedded systems, and software in partnership with technical leads, ensuring timely delivery of milestones that align with our mission and product roadmap.
- Conduct resource and project management, using data to track progress, maintain momentum and identify risks and delays.
- Perform systems engineering, including balancing trade-offs between cost and performance, lifecycle management, and risk identification and mitigation.
- Drive cross-functional execution, resolving blockers and aligning priorities across engineering, product, science, operations, and suppliers.
- Build and scale engineering workflows that meet QMS and regulatory standards while supporting speed, agility, and innovation.
- Collaborate with leadership to balance near-term execution with long-term technical and company goals.
- Lead negotiations with suppliers and contribute to design for manufacturing (DFM) efforts to ensure cost-effective, scalable, and high-quality production solutions.
- Coach and develop engineering leaders to build adaptive, high-performing teams capable of thriving under pressure and shifting priorities.
- Conduct 1:1s with engineering employees with a focus on goal setting, skill development, and career progression.
- Model Synex’s values in decision-making and leadership, fostering a culture of trust, psychological safety, and shared purpose across all teams.
- Model and encourage direct collaboration with peers throughout the organization to get things done quickly
- Hold teams accountable for clear, respectful communication to support collaboration and product excellence.
You might be right for this role if you:
- Have a proven track record in scaling high-performing engineering teams and delivering complex products on time in a startup environment.
- Are adept at managing multiple engineering teams and resources to meet deadlines without compromising on quality.
- Have significant experience in embedded systems and hardware/software integration, with an ability to push products from prototyping to market launch.
- Have managed engineering teams through technical and regulatory challenges, ensuring that timelines are met while navigating FDA or similar product approval processes.
- Have a strong foundation in project management, including tracking milestones, implementing risk mitigation strategies, and driving team accountability under pressure.
- Have experience working at the intersection of health and consumer products.
- Demonstrate a leadership style that cultivates psychological safety, values-centered execution, and high expectations for interpersonal integrity.
