Nick Zwart

Nick Zwart is a biomedical engineer, imaging scientist and software architect focused on the advancement of novel medical device technology. His early engagement with medical imaging started at the University of Washington (Seattle), where he earned a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis in robotics and signal processing.  He then joined the Keller Center of Imaging Innovation at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix Arizona. There, under Dr. James G Pipe, he obtained a doctoral degree from Arizona State University with a focus on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Angiography (MRA), novel motion-robust, acquisition, and reconstructions techniques (such as PROPELLER and spiral). 

After completing his graduate work, he was an Associate Research Professor at the Barrow. In that role, he developed and released open-source scientific tools, such as the Graphical Programming Interface (GPI) [http://gpilab.com]. The GPI software environment enables rapid prototyping of advanced imaging algorithms and spans the MR development pipeline from pulse sequence design and simulation to image reconstruction, visualization, and post-processing. GPI has been adopted as the preferred development platform for Philips MRI research sites and introductory courses; GPI continues to be taught at sites internationally. After catching the startup bug, he joined the Hyperfine Research, Inc. team to develop the first truly portable point-of-care bedside MRI system. At Hyperfine, Nick architected and developed key systems in both the core and imaging platforms to bring the product from an early proof-of-concept to the first commercial sales.
